The Siren Pinot Noir

Tasting Note

The Siren is a blend from exceptional barrels of wine crafted from ultra premium blocks of Pinot Noir grown on Akarua estate. Only 3,805 bottles were produced

With this wine, The Siren, we wanted to pay tribute to our founder and owner, Sir Clifford Skeggs, whose original businesses were all inspired by his love of the sea. It was this maritime-based success in the deep south of New Zealand that enabled him to venture into the world of wine.

The sub-region of Bannockburn in Central Otago  is now widely regarded as the Grand Cru site of Central Otago. But back in 1996 it had not yet attracted this type of interest from vintners. Still, Cliff saw the beauty and promise of this unique area and purchased the terraced land that became the Akarua vineyard we know today.  We like to think he was lured to this site.

When our small team at the winery thinks about the meaning of  The Siren now, we see its relevance in so many aspects – from our unique site which tends to bewitch those who visit us, to people that travel from all over the world to work and live here.

We believe this tiny pocket of dirt called Bannockburn can produce some of the most compelling Pinot Noir in the world.  In making this wine, winemaker Matt Connell lets the fruit guide him through a rigorous selection and blending process to achieve the final blend which he is proud to call The Siren.

100% Pinot Noir

Akarua Estate Vineyard

The 2013 vintage was slightly warmer than 2012. The vintage season was ideal from a winemaking perspective, as fruit developed slowly. We ran through to April before harvesting our premium blocks. This Indian summer allowed the grapes extra time to hang and reach full maturity and balance of flavours without excessive alcohol. Fruit for The Siren was cropped at levels of 5 to 6 tonnes per hectare. 30% whole bunch was included which has added an element of cinnamon and spice whilst also providing added texture and complexity.

Akarua produced more than 600 individual barrels of Pinot Noir from the 2013 vintage. Of these, about two in a hundred were assessed as being truly outstanding examples of our site, the vintage and Bannockburn Pinot Noir. These were the wines used to blend The Siren.

Individual barrels were chosen for the ability to highlight the finest elements of the site and to add an extra layer of complexity and length.

Deep ruby, bright clarity.

Extremely fragrant with violet florals, licorice and mocha notes.

Beautifully fruited mid-palate which is extremely textural and has complex dark fruits complemented by hints of oak spice and fine tannins. The finish is extremely long and balanced.
