Akarua Felton Road Vineyard

The 21 hectare vineyard situated at the end of Bannockburns’ Felton Road is divided in two blocks.

  • The Kawarau block is long and narrow 9.5 Hectares, rolling over a major river terrace. It runs from the banks of the Kawarau River, with the Long Gulley stream at its base back up the valley.
  • The Long Gulley block is 12.2 hectares, again with a dominant and more pronounced river terrace rolling down to river flat at its base.

Soils in both blocks are typically of those laid down by fans and terraces offering free drainage and are typically low in nutrients.

  • Close monitoring and management maintains grapevines with a modest crop load to produce clean, concentrated grapes typical to their variety.
  • Vines are entirely spur pruned using the Vertical Shoot Position (VSP) and are planted at 2,500 per hectare.
  • The vineyard is 100% planted on grafted rootstocks, which means that we have phylloxera tolerant vines.
  • The plantings are 87% Pinot Noir with Pinot Gris and Riesling sharing the balance
  • The vineyards were planted in 2000 and 2001
