Akarua Celebrates Completing 20 Harvests - Akarua Celebrates 20 Harvests

The 2019 harvest was a very special one for our Akarua team, marking a staggering twenty years since our first harvest back in 1999.

When founder Sir Clifford Skeggs acquired our home site on Cairnmuir Road back in 1996, despite being a largely white varietal drinker, he knew that planting Pinot Noir was the key to success. The continental climate lent itself greatly to growing Pinot and in particular, the Bannockburn terroir would go on to become the 'holy grail' of the central Otago viticulture world. Being amongst the first to invest in the area meant we were able to secure premium sites from the early days, and have had sole control over our vines for the past twenty years.

Rising from humble beginnings as a 'rough and tough boy from Bluff', Cliff was a successful entrepreneur with interests in fishing, farming, aviation but the wine industry provided an exciting new challenge. Now under the guidance of Clifford's son, David, Akarua has grown in both size and reputation to become one of the regions most recognized producers.

Introducing 25 Steps Pinot Noir...

Be one of the first to try Akarua’s new range, '25 Steps'.

An ancient glacial slope carved with 800m long terraces, two rows of vine per step, a 120m elevation change, aspects facing the four points of the compass and a wild mix of pinot noir clones from Pommard and Dijon make up the nine hectare single vineyard called “Twenty- Five Steps”. Our Viticulturalist calls it a “terroir field blend” – the variety coming from a wide spectrum of soil types, exposure and clones, rather than multiple grape varietals. An ‘Alice in Wonderland’ vineyard with surprises around every corner
