The Siren Pinot Noir 2012

Bob Campbell recently conducted a tasting for our wine portfolio. Several were selected for his highest ranking accolade, a Gold Ribbon.

The results were as follows

Akarua Vintage Brut 2010

Gold Ribbon, 96 Points and 5 stars

A Pinot Noir dominant blend with Chardonnay that has spent three years on the lees. Weighty, textural wine with zesty acidity adding freshness and energy. This is a serious sparkler with attractive bready yeast autolysis complementing citrus fruit flavours. Lengthy wine with a bone-dry finish.

Akarua Pinot Rosé 2014

Gold Ribbon, 95 Points, 5 stars

“Pretty Rose with charming strawberry, raspberry and cherry flavours enhanced by a creamy texture. A hint of sweetness is fruity rather than sugary. The wine has a seductively lingering finish. Very attractive Rose indeed”

Akarua Pinot Noir 2013

Gold Ribbon, 95 Points, 5 stars

“A classic fruit bomb style with ripe plum, black cherry, vanilla and liquorice flavours. Big, flavoursome wine with a featherbed texture and enough support from ripe tannins to prevent any suggestion of jamminess”.

Akarua The Siren 2012

Gold Ribbon, 96 Points, 5 stars

“Only 185 cases made. 100% de-stemmed bunches (30% whole-bunch the following year) and a very light filtration has helped produce a dense, flavoursome Pinot Noir. I noted red and black cherry, spice/thyme, plum, violet and spicy French oak characters but i suspect the wine will offer even greater complexity in time. Elegance on a grand scale. Powerful wine showing a great deal of finesse”

All three pinots were awarded top results; The Siren (92 Points), Akarua Pinot Noir 2012 (91 Points) and RUA Pinot Noir 2013 (92 Points, Editor’s Choice).

With this magazines influence on the world of wine, we are delighted to have achieved such high scores.

Medium Ruby with a hint of purple to the colour, the 2012 The Siren Pinot Noir  is a little funky and reduced to begin over notes of crushed raspberries, cherries and pomegranate with hints of mossy bark and Provence herbs. It offers great elegance in the mouth with a fine structure of firm, grainy tannins and lively acid, finishing with great length.

The debut 2012 vintage (5 stars) of Akarua's top Pinot Noir was blended from six barrels out of 600. Deep ruby, it is rich and supple, in a powerful yet approachable style, with a real sense of drive through the palate. Already lovely, with bold, cherry and plum flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak (40 per cent new), and a finely poised, persistent finish, it is still very youthful; open 2016+

Michael Cooper – 5 Stars, September 2014

Akarua The Siren Bannockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir

The debut 2012 vintage (5*) of Akarua's top Pinot Noir was blended from six barrels, chosen out of 600. Deep ruby, it is rich and supple, in a powerful yet approachable style, with a real sense of drive through the palate. Already lovely, with bold, cherry and plum flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak and a finely poised, persistent finish, it is still very youthful; open 2016+.

We only produced 187 cases of our icon pinot noir The Siren. Out of 600 barrels of pinot noir that we produced in 2012, only 6 were identified as being truly exceptional. It was these wines that we used to blend The Siren.

Bob Campbell MW has reinforced the quality of this wine by giving it 97 points and 5 stars in the latest edition of Gourmet Wine Traveller Magazine.
"A dense, flavoursome pinot noir. I noted red and black cherry, spice/thyme, plum, violet and spicy French oak characters. Elegance on a grand scale. It will offer greater complexity over time".
