Akarua Chardonnay

Tasting Note

VARIETY

100% Chardonnay

REGION

Central Otago

Sub-region: Bannockburn

STYLE

Dry

VINTAGE

The 2008 vintage was very cool to start but late spring / summer temperatures increased and carried into a long autumn that contributed to good fruit ripeness.

VINEYARD

Akarua’s vineyard is situated on alluvial terraces, consisting of light sand and schist-based soils. Our aspect and elevation result in a frost free vineyard with a northern, sunny position. These unique features, along with careful vineyard management result in grapes and wine of consistently high quality.

VINIFICATION

100% French oak (30% new barrels), limited barrel stirring and malolactic fermentation complement the 11 month oak ageing.

APPEARANCE

Golden, straw colour.

BOUQUET

A full bodied wine showing citrus and tropical aromas.

PALATE

The palate is rich with stonefruit and vanillin supported by a lingering minerality typical of the region, which provides great length.

CELLARING

5-7 years

SERVING TEMPERATURE

18 – 20 oC

FOOD ACCOMPANIMENTS

It is a great food wine and would accompany dishes ranging from creamy pasta, char-grilled fish through to rabbit pâté, and roasted wild pheasant.
