At 45 degrees South latitude, Central Otago is the world’s southernmost winemaking region. It is mountainous, rising to over 2,000 metres with vines planted amidst spectacular alpine scenery. The vineyards are the highest in New Zealand, located between 200 and 400 metres above sea level.
A combination of climate and soil gives Central Otago wines their unique qualities and regional characteristics. While growing conditions are challenging and yields low in comparison with other areas, the fruit quality and flavour intensity is exceptionally high. Central Otago wines are hard won, a factor that adds to their scarcity, value and appeal. This feature has also been summed up in the view that Central Otago wineries operate ‘on the edge’.
The ‘hard won’ aspect can be linked to Central Otago’s striking visual appeal. Not only is the wine superb but Central Otago, with its spectacular landscapes, is an attractive place to visit and spend time. This offers significant advantage, first from a branding perspective and second, from the point of view of developing an associated wine tourism business. Central Otago’s close proximity to Queenstown and Wanaka is also a strength given the success of their destination marketing efforts and high international recognition.
The Central Otago wine industry is still small with a remarkable degree of cohesiveness. It reflects, amongst other things, the influence of the industry’s pioneers and their commitment to quality, willingness to share information and risk-taking, resourcefulness and perseverance. This has resulted in a strong consensus around the need to consistently produce top quality no-compromise wine, and to price and market accordingly.
