Cameron Douglas scores high for Akarua!, Wed, 21 December 2016

Cameron Douglas scores high for Akarua!

We were thrilled to hear that Master Sommellier Cameron Douglas loved our Pinot Noir's as his latest tasting and review. Both the Akarua Pinot Noir 2015 and RUA Pinot Noir 2016 scored extremely well.

Akarua Pinot Noir 2015 - 95 Points

"Spicy and very fruity core with wild raspberry and cherry laden aromas, new and seasoned oak quite intense with vanilla and brown baking spices emerging as the wine opens-up. Dry on the palate with a core of red berry fruit – spiced cherry and wild fruits, definitive rose and red tea flavour, fine tannins, medium+ acidity and long finish. A lovely wine. "

RUA Pinot Noir 2016 - 93 Points

"Ripe, fresh, very fruity core with sweet raspberry and cherry, a hint of cola, rose and crushed rock, some new then seasoned oak suggestions. Juicy, fresh, crisp and dry; a lovely core of fruit, not too intense showing off vibrant red fruit, oak spice and texture – all leading to a lengthy and charming finish."

Michael Coopers Buyers Guide 2017 Released, Mon, 19 December 2016

Michael Cooper has released the highly recommended "Buyers Guide for NZ Wine" featuring many fantastic reviews of New Zealand Wine of all varietals. Including a great selection on Akarua Wines. A perfect Christmas gift for any wine lover!

Akarua Bannockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir
Estate-grown, harvested from mature vines and matured in French oak barriques, the 2014 vintage (5 stars) is deep ruby, with an enticingly fragrant bouquet. Generous, vibrantly fruity and supple, it has concentrated, well-ripened cherry, plum, spice and dried-herb flavours, showing excellent complexity, and a finely poised, lasting finish. Already delicious, it should be at its best 2018+

Akarua Central Otago Brut NV
This non-vintage wine (4 stars) is a blend of Pinot Noir (55–70 per cent) and Chardonnay (30–45 per cent), estate-grown at Bannockburn and disgorged after 18 months to two years on its yeast lees. The bouquet is typically fresh and yeasty; the palate is crisp and vigorous, with strong, lemony, appley, yeasty, slightly nutty flavours and a finely balanced finish

Akarua Central Otago Chardonnay
The estate-grown 2014 vintage (4 stars) was hand-harvested at Bannockburn and fermented and matured in French oak barrels (10 per cent new). Mouthfilling, it is creamy and biscuity, with youthful, grapefruit-like flavours to the fore, fresh acidity, a hint of spice, and good complexity and length. Subtle and finely poised, it should be at its best 2017+

Akarua Central Otago Rosé Brut NV
This non-vintage wine (4 stars) is a pale pink, vivacious blend of Pinot Noir (55–75 per cent) and Chardonnay (25–45 per cent), estate-grown at Bannockburn and disgorged after 18 months to two years on its yeast lees. It is typically crisp and dryish, with fresh, gentle strawberry and spice flavours, showing excellent complexity and length

Akarua Central Otago Vintage Brut
The 2011 vintage (4 stars) is a pale, light and vivacious blend of Pinot Noir (61 per cent) and Chardonnay (39 per cent), estate-grown at Bannockburn and disgorged after a minimum of three years on its yeast lees. It has a yeasty bouquet and crisp, racy palate, showing good complexity

Akarua Rua Central Otago Pinot Noir
For a third-tier label, this regional blend can be remarkably good. Matured for six months in French oak barriques (10 per cent new), the highly attractive 2015 vintage (4 stars) was grown at three company-owned sites, two at Bannockburn. Delicious in its youth, it is floral, sweet-fruited and supple, with strong, plummy, cherryish, slightly nutty flavours, showing good complexity. More subtle and savoury than you'd expect at this price, it offers fine value

Akarua Rua Pinot Rosé
The 2015 vintage (4 stars) is from Pinot Noir grapes, estate-grown at Bannockburn and Lowburn. Bright pink, it is floral and charming, with gentle plum, strawberry and spice flavours, a sliver of sweetness (9 grams/litre of residual sugar) balanced by fresh acidity, and excellent delicacy, vivacity and immediacy

Akarua The Siren Bannockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir
The second 2013 vintage (5 stars) of Akarua's top Pinot Noir was estate-grown and selected from 13 barrels out of 650. Deeply coloured, it has a highly perfumed, savoury bouquet. Powerful and densely packed, it is very sweet-fruited and finely textured, with concentrated, vibrant cherry, plum and spice flavours, fresh acidity and silky tannins. Already delicious, it should be long-lived; best drinking 2018+
