David Skeggs - Proprietor
David completed degrees in Commerce and Law at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He then worked in Auckland in finance and management roles before returning to Dunedin to work for the family business in 1990. David has worked his way up through the business and has been the Managing Director of Skeggs Group Ltd for a number of years.
Skeggs Group is a second-generation family business now owned by David and his two brothers, Bryan and Graeme. Skeggs Group has extensive interests in Seafood, Shipping, Tourism and investments in property and wine.
There has always been a family interest in wine and David's father Sir Clifford Skeggs was one of the initial investors in the Central Otago wine industry due to his love for wine and the region. He purchased the property at Akarua in 1995 and planting commenced in 1996. By September 1998, 81,000 vines had been planted over 34.5 hectares and by 2001 additional land had been purchased and further vineyards developed, making Akarua today the largest family owned single vineyard and winery in Central Otago. The Skeggs family has a long association with Central Otago, as it has been their holiday destination since the early seventies.
David took over direct responsibility for overseeing the family's investment in Central Otago at Akarua in 2008 and since then the company has been restructured with the goal of becoming one of New Zealand's leading Pinot Noir producers. A board of directors was established with experienced wine industry people and a new winemaker, Matt Connell, was appointed.
David is an avid golfer and likes to play whenever he gets the opportunity. He enjoys most outdoor pursuits and traveling with his wife Linda. David and Linda have five children, one of which is still living at home.
